Boston Bruins Sign Seth Griffith To One-Year Contract Extension Following Breakout AHL-Season
The Boston Bruins have announced that they have come to terms with right-winger Seth Griffith to a one-year, two-way contract with an NHL salary cap hit of $625,000. The news was overshadowed by the shocking extension to Kevan Miller which was announced at the same time, but it’s good news for the Bruins’ nonetheless.
After playing in 57 games at the AHL level this season, Seth Grifith scored 24 goals and 53 assists for 77 points. The only player to score more than Seth Griffith in the AHL this season was Hershey-Bears forward and former Boston Bruins-prospect Chris Bourque. In 72 games, Bourque scored 24 goals and added 50 assists for 80 points. In 15 less games, Seth Griffith totaled only three less points, something that should not be overlooked by Bruins’ management as they carve out their roster for next season.

Seth Griffith‘s one setback may be his size, but if players like Brad Marchand have shown anything, it’s that size doesn’t define a player. There have been many cases of smaller athletes excelling at the highest-level of competition in sports, and there’s no reason to think that Seth Griffith can’t be the next player to do so.
While Griffith’s NHL-level cap-hit is inexpensive at $625,000, it’s clear that the Bruins’ aren’t simply handing him a role on the big club next season. The contract is a prove-it deal that lasts one season, but is also a two-way contract which will allow the Bruins to utilize Seth Griffith however they may wish. Another season in the AHL could be in the cards for Griffith next season depending on how he performs in the pre-season and how the rest of the roster shapes up, but Griffith has a skill-set that teams can never get enough of.

One thing that could factor into Seth Griffith‘s effectiveness next season at the NHL level is entirely dependent on the role he’s given. A skilled player like Seth Griffith simply can’t play his game effectively in a fourth-line role, and it will be interesting to see if Claude Julien will give Griffith the reigns in a top-nine role next season.
