Boston Bruins Sign Kevan Miller To Four-Year Contract Extension After Up-And-Down Season
The Boston Bruins have signed Kevan Miller to a four-year contract extension that will last until the 2019-20 season. The contract is worth $10,000,000, and will count as an average annual cap-hit of $2,500,000 for the Bruins over the next four seasons.
Kevan Miller posted career highs in multiple categories in his third season with the Boston Bruins. Miller skated in a career-high 71 games and was able to score a career-high five goals, thirteen assists, 18 points. He also posted career highs in penalty minutes with 53 and posted the second-best plus-minus rating on the Bruins this season with a plus-15.

Kevan Miller is not a defenseman that will stand out in any statistical category, and after dealing with many defensive-issues throughout the season, this extension comes as somewhat of a shock. The response throughout social media has been astoundingly against the extension, and it isn’t hard to understand why after watching some of Kevan Miller‘s more incoherent plays from the previous season.
What Kevan Miller lacks in skill and defensive-ability, he makes up for in brute force. Arguably one of the strongest Bruins’ on the roster, Miller is always ready to step in and defend his teammates the way players on the Boston Bruins are expected to do. Miller’s career highlights are almost all hit, or fight related, and that could have played a big role in the extension that he received this offseason.
Another contributing factor to Kevan Miller‘s extension could surround his leadership abilities. Despite only playing in three NHL seasons, Miller is actuall 28 years old and was a very valued part of the University of Vermont’s hockey program. Playing with Vermont from 2007 until 2011 and serving as the captain in 2010-11 and a co-captain in 2009-10, it’s hard to argue that Miller has a certain leadership pedigree to his name.

Regardless of his ability to fight, hit, and provide leadership in the locker room, this signing might ultimately be one of the biggest mistakes the Bruins’ make this offseason. Signing Miller to a contract worth half of what he eventually signed for, and for half of the duration might have been an easier pill to swallow for Bruins’ fans, but that still might be pushing it.
