Boston Bruins: Torey Krug Likely To Miss Start Of 2016-17 Season After Undergoing Successful Shoulder Surgery

The Boston Bruins entered the offseason with three players requiring surgery. Fast forward a few weeks, and Torey Krug, David Krejci, and Matt Beleskey have all reportedly undergone successful surgery per the Bruins’ official website.

Torey Krug‘s surgery was required to fix an ailing right shoulder injury and it was done on April 21st 2016. The recovery time for his injury is expected to be six months which would put his availability for the start of the season in doubt. The season is set to start in early October, while Torey Krug is likely to be out until late October if this timeline is to be followed accordingly.. The Bruins could certainly use Torey Krug on their roster on opening night to set the tone on what they hope will be a more successful season than their previous two.

Torey Krug had a very good season this year in his third full season with the team. His 81 games, 40 assists, and 44 points are all career highs in his career as well as the 33 penalty minutes he amassed. The Bruins could certainly use all of the offense they can get next season, and with Krug’s 44 points being the sixth highest total among all Bruins players last season, it’s clear that he’s a valuable part of their team.

One thing that could be seen as a positive from this situation from the Bruins’ perspective is the fact that this injury will likely give them leverage in any contract extension talks with Krug. With shoulder surgery only hurting his value, the Bruins could potentially get away with signing Krug for a less-expensive deal, or a deal with less term to determine whether or not his shoulder injury will affect his play moving forward.

Torey Krug is currently coming off of two consecutive one-year contracts with his 2014-15 contract being worth $1,400,000, and his contract last season being worth $3,400,000. The Boston Bruins could look to sign Torey Krug for a slight increase on that cap hit which could total roughly $4,000,000 to $4,500,000, with any varying length of term.

Both David Krejci and Matt Beleskey project to be ready to go for the start of the 2016-17 campaign with Krejci’s recovery timeline being estimated at anywhere between three to five months. Matt Beleskey‘s injury should take roughly six weeks to heal, giving him more than enough time to get in some summer workouts before reporting for training camp next fall.

This is a tough break for Torey Krug who was likely on Team USA’s radar for the World Cup of Hockey which will take place in September. David Krejci still has a chance to play in the World Cup of Hockey for his home country of the Czech Republic, which would be great to get him back into game shape prior to the start of the season.
