Boston Bruins: Loui Eriksson Future In Boston Uncertain As July 1st Looms

With the Boston Bruins season ending, Loui Eriksson is now set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. Most of the 2015-16 revolved around the question of whether Loui Eriksson would be traded or extended by the NHL trade deadline. The trade deadline came and went, and Loui Eriksson remained a member of the Boston Bruins as the team looked to make a run for the playoffs. Many were unhappy with the decision at the time, and the decision can only be more unpopular now as the Bruins missed the playoffs and didn’t get anything in return for their 30-goal scorer in Eriksson.

When talking about his future, Loui Eriksson made a simple statement. “We’ll see what’s going to happen.” It’s clear that Eriksson has tremendous talent and should command a significant increase on his $4,250,000 contract that he’s recently come off of. Eriksson can play a 200-foot game and scored 30 goals and over 60 points this season; the market will be there should be want to explore his options, and it seems he does. “It’s a big decision, where I end up,” Eriksson said. “So, we’ll see what’s going to happen this summer. I had three great years here, and we’ll see what’s going to happen here this summer. That’s all I can say.”

The Bruins could still possibly sign Loui Eriksson ahead of July 1st, but as of right now, the likeliness of that happening doesn’t seem very high. “I think it’s been slowing down a little bit,” he said. “But you never know what’s going to happen now. It’s to up to Boston to see if they want to keep me or what’s going to happen here. So, we’ll see what’s going to happen.”

Loui Eriksson came to the Bruins as a part of the deal that sent Tyler Seguin to Dallas, so losing him is even more disappointing for Bruin’s fans who are also very well aware of the fact that Matt Fraser was lost to waivers, and Reilly Smith was traded for Jimmy Hayes. With three pieces of the trade potentially being lost for relatively nothing, only Joe Morrow would remain on the Bruins after the infamous Tyler Seguin trade; not an ideal situation for the Bruins to be in, especially with two-straight missed-playoff bids since trading the young center. “I think the whole team here wanted to make it to the playoffs,” Eriksson said. “It’s just too bad it ended up being like this. I think everyone’s disappointed.”
