The Boston Bruins started the month of March as one of the hottest teams in the Atlantic Division. Now at the end of it, the Bruins are facing elimination from the playoffs. The Bruins are pulling off their worst stretch of losses of the season, and the Bruins are going to need to find that elusive fifth gear if they want to hold on the final playoff spot in the Atlantic.

“You don’t want to be that team that hopes other teams are losing,” said Torey Krug of the Bruins current situation. “You want to be the team that takes hold of the situation, grabs it and runs with it. If we do that it will set the tone for the playoffs. We need to take advantage of the opportunities we have. Right now we’re sitting in a playoff position, and we need to make sure we stay there and go about it the right way.”

While the Boston Bruins have been in trouble, they’ve been helped by the equally unlucky Detroit Red Wings. Thanks to Detroit, the Bruins hold on to a minute one point lead for the third playoff slot with just five games to go. Now the Bruins have to prove they want to be in the playoffs by scoring a win against the St. Louis Blues on Friday.

“You hate to have to depend on those kinds of things, but there’s no doubt after you lose a game like last night that you look over the shoulder to see what the other team is doing,” said Claude Julien of the Bruins situation. “We want to control our own situation, and that’s what we’re trying to do right now.”

One thing is for sure. The Bruins don’t seem to be in control of their destiny at the moment.

The Black and Gold need to figure out what the problem is and they need to do it yesterday. In their last ten games, the Bruins have only been able to put up 16 goals. In eight of their last ten, the B’s have been held to just two goals or less. The Bruins play the Red Wings on April 7. That game may very well end up determining who will end up with that final playoff slot.
