The Boston Bruins went in to the Joe Louis Arena today knowing they needed another solid performance. The Bruins were battling with the Detroit Red Wings for the second playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. “We know it’s a big game — they play very well here at home,” offered Brad Marchand to the media before the game. “We want to make sure we come prepared to play and really focus on doing a good job playing our system.”

The Bruins started off well. Brad Marchand earned his 28th goal of the season just eight seconds into the game, earning himself yet another sentence in Bruins history. While the Bruins earned themselves an early 3-1 lead, the Red Wings came back to tie it and move ahead. The game became a see-saw between the two teams, but the final goal was scored by the Red Wings. Detroit ended up beating the Bruins 6-5.
“It’s disappointing. I thought we did come out the right way and came out of that first period with a good lead, and it was unfortunate that we gave it up.” offered Marchand after the game. “I thought we did a good job of battling back and staying in the game and playing with that confidence to come back, so it’s disappointing, the loss. But still a few games left here on the road trip and we want to make sure we make the most of it.”

“I think that’s what hurt us the most,” said Bruins Head Coach Claude Julien about the disappointing loss. “The power play opportunities that they had, they got some momentum back from that and scored some goals,” said Julien. “And it was just a weird game, you know, from the offside that was inconclusive…so we move on and I don’t know why that second goal wasn’t reviewed by the league, because it looked like it hit the stick, so it was one of those weird games.”
The Bruins are currently 4-2-1 in the month of February. They’ve got three more games in this road trip. First they get to take out Gregory Campbell and the rest of the anemic Columbus Blue Jackets. Then, it’s on to Nashville and then the Dallas Stars. Bruins alternate captain Patrice Bergeron is still traveling with the team. That can only be a good sign that the Bruins will get back their All-Star and all-around best player on the team.
