Malcolm Subban was recent called up to serve as Tuukka Rask‘s backup when Jonas Gustavsson was taken to the hospital after the first period of the Bruins’ game against the Anaheim Ducks. After being returned to the Providence Bruins of the AHL, Malcolm Subban unfortunately experienced a similar fate.

During the pregame warm-up prior to the Providence Bruins’ game against the Portland Pirates, news surfaced that Malcolm Subban was being transported to the hospital by ambulance after taking a puck to the throat.

Mark Divver of The Providence Journal tweeted out that there was no word yet on what the extent of Malcolm Subban‘s injury is, and that he would be staying at the hospital overnight in Portland per Bruce Cassidy, the Providence Bruins head coach.

  • In relief of Malcolm Subban, Zane McIntyre stepped up and helped backstop the Baby-Bruins to a 35-save, 3-1 win over the Portland Pirates. Frank Vatrano was able to put the exclamation mark on the game with an empty net goal, his 17th in just 16 games in the AHL this season.

Chris Roy of the Maine Hockey Journal was providing updates on the situation as it occurred, including the fact that the Bruins’ were left with a forward taking over the duties of backup goaltender for the night. Benn Feriero was designated to sit in the backup spot on the Providence bench and if need be, he was going to be the go-to-guy to replace Zane McIntyre if necessary. Fortunately for everybody involved, he was able to leave the game without donning goaltending equipment.

    More from Causeway Crowd

In 27 games played this year, Malcolm Subban has posted a respectable 14-8-5 record while compling a goals against average of 2.46 and a save percentage of 0.911. Goaltenders are widely considered to require the most time to fully develop, and at only 22 years old, Malcolm Subban has a lot of time to develop into the superstar goaltender that the Bruins believed he could become when he was drafted in the first round of the 2012 draft.

Zane McIntyre has played less games than Malcolm Subban this season as expected, appearing in only 18. Unfortunately for McIntyre, his statistics aren’t exactly the most appealing statistics for a goaltender. In his 18 games, McIntyre has compiled a 6-6-5 record while posting a 3.04 goals against average and a 0.884 save percentage.

Next: Not Malcolm Subban's Time Yet

This season is McIntyre’s first in a professional league after coming to the Bruins’ following an impressive season at the University of North Dakota. In 42 starts last season, McIntyre posted an impressive 29-10-3 record with a 2.05 goals against average and a 0.99 save percentage. While at the University of North Dakota, McIntyre grew to be more comfortable and improved his output in each year. Hopefully that trend will continue as McIntyre gets used to the pace of the professional leagues over time.
