Malcolm Subban‘s time on the Boston Bruins roster was over almost as quickly as it began. The Bruins’ goaltending prospect was sent down to the AHL after the team received news that Jonas Gustavsson was ready to return to game-action as Tuukka Rask‘s backup.

On January 26th, Jonas Gustavsson was taken out of a game against the Anaheim Ducks with an elevated heart rate following the first period. Gustavsson has a history of issues related to his heart and the Bruins’ described the situation as “precautionary”. The team placed Gustavsson on the Injured Reserve as he was evaluated further, a move that required the Bruins’ to make a transaction to fill the back-up goaltender role.

After being recalled on an emergency basis to fill in for Jonas Gustavsson, Subban exclusively played the role of backup to Tuukka Rask. If Jonas Gustavsson‘s situation would have lasted longer, it’s likely that the Bruins’ would have eventually given Malcolm Subban a start, but the situation clearly wasn’t dire enough to thrust the young, budding netminder into a game while Tuukka Rask was ready to go.

More from Causeway Crowd

Malcolm Subban has had decent success in Providence this year, playing in 26 games, recording a 14-8-4 record with a 2.45 goals against average and a 0.913 save percentage. This is Malcolm Subban‘s third year at the professional level after being drafted by the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2012 draft, and its yet to be determined if he’ll end up being the Bruins’ future goaltender or if the team will flip him for other assets. It isn’t hard to see why Malcolm Subban‘s name has come up in trade talks over the last few seasons due to the fact that the  Bruins currently have a franchise goaltender in Tuukka Rask who is still in his prime at only 28 years old and has five years remaining on his current contract.

Malcolm Subban might get his chance to make his first NHL start of the 2015-16 season, and second of his career at some point this year, but for now, he’ll return to Providence as the Baby-Bruins make their push for the post-season.
