While the Boston Bruins didn’t go into the All-Star break on a high note, there is some good news coming out of the TD Garden. It appears that Gustavsson’s admission to Mass General last night was more of a precautionary move and not the sign of any serious injury. Here is the statement issued from the Boston Bruins front office.

“Jonas Gustavsson was removed from Tuesday’s game for precautionary reasons due to an elevated heart rate. He was taken to Mass General Hospital and remained there overnight for testing. All preliminary tests came back negative and he was discharged Wednesday afternoon. Jonas is expected to rejoin the team after the NHL All-Star Break pending clearance from the Bruins medical staff.”
That’s certainly going to cause a sigh of relief for the Bruins organization for multiple reasons.
Gusatvsson is healthy. With their backup goaltender alright, that’s one less thing the Bruins organization will have to start looking at as the trade deadline looms closer.
The Bruins won’t burn out Tuukka Rask. The Bruins seem to have so little confidence in Niklas Svedberg last year, they overworked Tuukka Rask last season. That was one of the reasons why the Bruins failed to make the playoffs last year, and with Gustavsson OK, it’s unlikely they’ll repeat that mistake.

The Bruins won’t have to call anyone up from Providence. The Providence Bruins goaltenders are doing an adequate job right now for the B’s AHL team. Malcolm Subban is putting up decent numbers in Providence. His 13-8-4 record (2.5 goals against and a .912 save percentage) might have been good enough to make an emergency start for the big club, but it’s nice that the Bruins won’t have to risk another disastrous performance like Subban put in against the St. Louis Blues last season.
Zane McIntyre won’t be ready for a NHL start this season. So, thankfully, the P-Bruins will get to keep their goaltenders.
This couldn’t have happened at a better time. While that sounds callous, the Bruins (save Patrice Bergeron) will get the All-Star break off to relax, recover, and recharge. A couple of days of his feet will do Gustavsson good, and hopefully the team will be ready to go back into the mix at the end of the break.
