The Boston Bruins have always been about their players. There is a reason why Milt Schmidt still stops by the TD Garden, even at the age of 97. Johnny Bucyk has been employed by the B’s in some capacity for nearly sixty years. The Bruins will take care of their own, no matter what.

The Bruins are a family, and they always react when one of their own gets hurt. At the Winter Classic the NWHL were included in the Bruins-Canadiens rivalry. Boston Pride forward Denna Laing went into the boards during their Winter Classic match and ended up sustaining a very serious spinal injury. Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs took point on doing what he could to help part of Boston’s hockey family.
The Bruins organization started off with a $200,000 donation, something what Jacobs called a “call to action”.
“Over the past few weeks our organization has gotten to know Denna and her family,” said Jacobs of Laing.”And we have all been inspired by their positive attitudes and Denna’s fighting spirit. As leaders in the New England hockey community we want to help with Denna’s recovery and rehab and this is our first step in what will be continuing support for the Laing family.”
Now, we all hate the Habs. We certainly have plenty of reasons to. But every once in a while, the Montreal Canadiens step up to the plate and really surprise you. Before tonight’s Bruins-Canadiens game at the Bell Centre, the Canadiens took several minutes to highlight the life of Ms. Laing, focusing on her not as a member of a Boston organization, but as part of the hockey family.
“Fans,” said Canadiens announcer Michael Lacroix before the tribute played. “Tonight your Canadiens are working together with the NHL and Boston Bruins to support a member of our Hockey Family — Denna Laing.
As a member of the NWHL Boston Pride, and one of the pioneers in a breakthrough moment for her sport, Denna Laing participated in the Outdoor Women’s Classic. Tragically, Denna suffered a severe injury playing the sport she loves.
You can join your Canadiens, the NHL and the Bruins in supporting Denna by bidding on game worn jerseys from tonight’s game. 100% of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Denna Laing Fund.”
It’s not often that the Canadiens and Bruins can agree on anything, but when they do, it usually makes a substantial impact in the world of hockey.
