For those who aren’t aware of who Denna Laing is, or what happened to her, she is a hockey player for the Boston Pride of the NWHL, and the former captain of the Princeton hockey team. On December 31st 2015, one day prior to the winter classic, and just before the alumni game played at Gillette Stadium, the Boston Pride and Montreal Les Canadiennes played an NWHL game; a big step for the all-woman’s hockey league. Unfortunately, Denna Laing stepped on a stick and went crashing into the boards head first; an injury that left her with a serious spinal injury.
The commissioner of the NHL, Gary Bettman, said that the NHL would be helping Denna Laing following the incident, and he is clearly following through. “Everyone at the National Hockey League, including the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens, joins Denna Laing’s coaches, teammates, friends and fans in wishing Denna the very best as she confronts the challenges ahead,” Bettman said. “While we are certain Denna will be served well by the tenaciousness that is her trademark, we also will work with the Laing family to rally the support of the hockey family during Denna’s rehabilitation.”

The league announced on Tuesday that both the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens would be autographing their game-worn jerseys from Tuedsay night’s game and auctioning them off with 100 percent of the funds raised going towards her rehabilitation and recovery funds. This shows that despite how big the rivalry is between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens, the game and the standings can be put on hold following the game in an attempt to do something good for someone who truly needs the support.

Rivalry or not, the Bell Centre in Montreal showed a slideshow of Denna Laing prior to the game between the Bruins and the Canadiens and a very audible level of applause and cheers were heard throughout. The Montreal Canadiens fan-base at the Bell Centre was very supportive and even sat quietly after the slideshow was done to offer their thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for the Boston Pride player; a sign that hockey fans around the world, regardless of the jersey they wear, are all part of one big community that stands united when it matters most.

The NHL, it’s players, and various college teams, have already shown their support by pledging money, tweeting out support, and even visiting the Boston Pride forward, as Terry O’Reilly recently did. The Boston Bruins donated $200,000 to help Denna Laing in her recovery earlier this week
