Boston Bruins: Torey Krug Skates in 200th Game
Torey Krug was first really noticed in the second round of the 2013 playoffs when the Boston Bruins took on the New York Rangers. Fast forward three years, and Torey Krug has officially skated in 200 NHL regular games, and what’s even more fitting is the fact that his 200th game came against the New York Rangers.
The Bruins’ were dealing with a few injuries to some of their veteran defenders in the second round of the 2013 playoffs, and as a result, Torey Krug was given an opportunity. Most fans of the Boston Bruins, and perhaps even the New York Rangers, still remember Krug’s explosive first five games when he came up big for the Bruins and scored four goals.

Torey Krug instantly became the Bruins most dangerous offensive weapon on defense, and he has rewarded the team ever since with a consistent run of points scored each year over the next few seasons. Krug went from a playoff-plugin to a regular player in the Bruins lineup in a span of a few months, and it isn’t hard to see why. In the 2013-14 season, Torey Krug found the back of the net 14 times and added 26 assists for 40 points in 79 games. the following season, Torey Krug scored 12 goals and added 27 assists for 39 points in 78 games, showing his impressive rookie showing wasn’t a fluke. In what is turning out to be his most impressive season so far, Torey Krug has posted three goals and added 17 assists for 20 games in just 40 games so far in the 2015-16 season.

Torey Krug has scored 29 goals and 72 assists for 101 points in 200 games so far in his career, very impressive numbers for a defenseman in his first three seasons. Arguably the most impressive thing about Torey Krug is his improved defensive ability coming into the 2015-16 season. With a very depleted blue-line, many people were skeptical about Torey Krug’s ability to play a more defensive game, especially given his size at only five-foot-nine and weighing 181 pounds. Torey Krug played well in relief of Dennis Seidenberg to start the season, and once the veteran German defender was able to return to the lineup, Krug was returned to the bottom-pairing.

With Torey Krug’s contract coming up once again following the 2015-16 season, the Bruins will have a very important decision to make regarding the future of Torey Krug as a Boston Bruin. Don Sweeney just fixed the team’s salary cap situation after Peter Chiarelli left the Bruins in a stranglehold due to his poor cap management, and if Sweeney has any sense, he won’t let the team return to that state. A reasonable contract for Torey Krug would be somewhere in the range of four years for $16,000,000, averaging $4,000,000 per season. Anything higher than that number should cause hesitation on the part of Don Sweeney and the Bruins’ management team. Torey Krug will be an RFA, as opposed to a UFA, which is fortunate for the Bruins as it allows them to hold all of the cards in contract negotiations.

When asked how he wanted to mark his 200th NHL game, Torey Krug gave a simple, but admirable answer.”Just a win,” Krug said while smiling. “I’ll be happy with a win.” Unfortunately, the Bruins, who entered the third period on Monday night win a 1-0 lead over the New York Rangers, gave up two goals in the third period and eventually lost 2-1. The game didn’t exactly go the way Krug may have liked, but just 200 games into his career, he has a lot of time to make up for this game.
