Boston Bruins Adam McQuaid Ready For Leadership Role

Greg M. Cooper-USA TODAY Sports

One of the first moves Don Sweeney made after being announced as the new general manager of the Boston Bruins was re-signing Adam McQuaid to a four-year contract extension. The average annual cap hit for tthat contract is $2,750,000, which is actually a very decent price for a solid defenseman like McQuaid. Although there are a few downfalls to the contract, such as Kevan Miller being essentially a clone of Adam McQuaid with less mileage and a smaller cap hit. In addition to Kevan Miller, one of the big downfalls of Adam McQuaid in general is his health.

  • Over the past few seasons, Adam McQuaid has missed significant time due to injuries. In the 2014-15 season, a 63 game season was relatively healthy for McQuaid, who missed the majority of the 2013-14 season to injury. Hopefully McQuaid can turn a new leaf and have some luck in the injury department, because when healthy, McQuaid is surely one of the harder defensemen to play against on the Bruins roster due to his hard-hitting style.

Adam McQuaid spoke to the Boston Bruins website after one of the teams informal captain practices, “I’ve been here a little while now and I do want to take the next step,” He continued to say “I want to try and bring more to the table, hopefully play a little bit more in a top-four role, but at the end of the day, it’s all about what works within the team and the system, and whatever brings success.” As one of the more seasoned veterans on the Bruins roster, it will be important that he takes on a new leadership role with the club.

“They’re putting faith in me, and I want to reward that faith,” McQuaid went on to touch upon some of the other offseason transactions, most notably the subtraction of Dougie Hamilton “I didn’t foresee things happening the way they did, but obviously, I’m very excited to be back. It’s an organization that has done a lot for me, and I want to continue to win here.”

As a 6’5 defenseman, McQuaid is one of the more physically imposing players on the ice at any given time. Hopefully he will be seen on the ice more frequently than in the press box this season, and hopefully he’ll prove that he is worth every penny of his new contract.
