Tyler Seguin was once considered future cornerstone of the Boston Bruins. Drafted second overall in the 2010 draft, the young center had all the makings of a superstar forward. Fast-forward to 2015 and he’s already played two seasons in Dallas after being traded there following the 2012-2013 season. The trade was rumored for a few weeks before it was actually made, and the return was less-than-satisfactory when considering the potential market there is for a player of Seguin’s caliber. Many reasons arose as to why Tyler Seguin may have been moved, and his partying lifestyle seemed to play the biggest role.

In the Bruins “Behind the B” series, management went on record to say that because Seguin didn’t produce enough in the playoffs, they needed to move him. While that might be a reasonable reason to move some players are certain points in their career, it does not seem like a good enough reason to give up on a then-21 year-old, former second overall pick.
“That was real difficult after the trade happened, seeing all the things that were going on.” – Tyler Seguin
Tyler Seguin has recently stated “I think the real tough thing was being able to keep my mouth shut.” It goes without saying that players are expected to conduct themselves in a certain way, and although the Bruins may have seen Seguin as immature, the fact that he hasn’t opened his mouth once about any personal resentment for the trade until two years following it is something that should be admired. Seguin went on to say that the stories that were concocted by the media were essentially fuel for him. “I had radio stations and newspapers where people were asking me if I wanted to post an article just saying my story. Seeing all the “Behind the B” stuff and that footage, it was tough. I used it more as motivation and just said I’ll use my words on the ice.” Tyler Seguin might be growing up, if the stories were at all true.

Tyler Seguin has had two extremely successful seasons in Dallas so far, and at 23 years old, he should be one of the league’s best for years to come. The Boston Bruins made a mistake by moving Tyler Seguin, and although the past cannot be rewritten, it’s probably safe to say that most, if not all Bruins fans wish it could be.
