Shawn Thornton Still Making A Difference in Boston

Former Bruins forward Shawn Thornton was back in Boston this weekend. Thornton was in attendance for Friday’s Red Sox-Rays game. (The Red Sox won that game 7-5.) Shawn Thornton accepted a check from EchoStor Technologies on behalf of his foundation. That $12,500 check will be used to help out organizations trying to find cures for cancer and Parkinson’s disease.

Shawn Thornton spent seven seasons in Boston, forming part of the infamous Merlot Line. While Thornton spent almost his entire time in Boston as part of the fourth line, he was a lot more than that to the Bruins organization. He was one of those players that helped the Bruins re-define the team’s identity as the ‘Big, Bad, Bruins’. He helped change the atmosphere in the locker room, and in the city of Boston.

He was part of the 2011 Stanley Cup Championship team. His leadership, his demeanor, and his fists are still missed by Bruins fans.

Shawn Thornton still has a few more things to do in New England before he heads back to Sunrise to finish out his contract with the Florida Panthers. Next week, Thornton will be hosting the 6th Annual Putts and Punches Golf Tournament. The current Bruins team will certainly be represented as they head out to support a friend and former teammate.

Shawn Thornton will also be in town long enough to support his running team. On August 16th, Thornton’s team will participate in their third straight year in the Falmouth Road Race. It’s another chance for the Thornton foundation to take a swing at stopping cancer and Parkinson’s disease. Over the last few years, his foundation has raised and given out hundreds of thousands of dollars in an effort to wipe out these diseases.
