Boston Bruins: Cody Franson Wants a Stanley Cup Contender
In a radio interview with TSN 1040 in Vancouver, Cody Franson handed out some pretty important information regarding what team he wants to play for in the future. With everything that was said, all signs seem to be pointing to the Boston Bruins.

“There’s some very interested ones,” Franson said of the five to six teams that he is currently in talks with, “but some teams are in cap situations and all the rest that comes with it.” That sounds like he is talking about the Boston Bruins. Franson goes on in the interview to speak specifically about the Bruins saying that they would be “an interesting spot.”
If that wasn’t enough, Franson then expanded on the type of deal he is looking for. Basically, it seems like he will take anything that works as long as it is not a single year in length. What really stood out as interesting was what he said about competing for the Stanley Cup. “If you take a short-term deal, like a two-year or something like that, then I’m probably going to try to put myself in a position to win a Cup.”

Once again, reading a statement like this, I can’t help but believe that he is thinking about the Boston Bruins while saying this. Now, the Boston Bruins are far removed from the team that brought them to their last two Stanley Cup Finals. However, with the addition of Cody Franson to the team, the Bruins certainly become a likely playoff team filled with players with loads of playoff experience. Depending on what other teams Franson is talking to, the Bruins may be his best option if a Stanley Cup run is what he is looking for.
Don Sweeney has made it clear on numerous occasions that he is never done looking around the league to improve his team. Also, putting the idea of a two-year deal in Franson’s head might be something that Don Sweeney would do. If he can make the acquisition of Cody Franson a possibility, I believe that Franson would become a Boston Bruin. If this two-year signing were to occur, two things would need to happen.

First, Cody Franson would have to take on a team friendly salary during his time here. This may seem out of the question for a free agent like Franson, but there have been many situations where a player has taken a pay cut in order to be on a team for the purpose of winning the Stanley Cup. If this deal were to get done, Franson would need to accept four million dollars or less for two years. Second, Don Sweeney would still need to move a roster player. Even if Franson did take a pay cut, the Bruins would still be too close to the salary cap for comfort. Sweeney would need to move a roster player that is making three million dollars or more and trust that a young prospect would be able to fill in the vacant position.
With all of these stipulations in place, it still remains unlikely that the Boston Bruins will end up signing Cody Franson, but the fact that he seems to be showing a great deal of interest in the team is very good news, regardless of what happens.
