The Boston Bruins can kill two birds in one stone with tomorrow’s 7 p.m. match against the Florida Panthers. They can 1.) take further control of their own destiny, and 2.) Essentially destroy the Panthers (now at 6.3%) hopes of seeing the post-season this year. The Bruins are playing significantly better hockey than they were playing just a few weeks ago, and they have a chance to earn either the sixth or seventh seed if they continue to play at this level.
Puck Prose
They’ve only got to make up three points against the Detroit Red Wings (who will give them the sixth seed) or the Washington Capitals (the seventh).
The Detroit Wings have been playing some severely inconsistent hockey recently. They’re 2-2-1 in their last five games, and they’re really hoping to hunker down and earn two solid points against the Ottawa Senators. (Now that’s a game that a lot of Bruins fans will wonder who to cheer for.) It’d be nice to see Detroit win that one. (While it would be harder for the B’s to gain a more secure playoff spot, at least the Bruins chances of getting eighth would be better if Ottawa dropped tomorrow night’s game.)

The Capitals have also played some up-and-down hockey, going 3-2 in their last five. They’ve had strong victories, and crushing defeats. They take on the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow. While Carolina has been run over by most of the league, the Canes have surprised teams by playing profoundly desperate hockey. (like they did the Bruins earlier in the season).
The B’s know they’ve got no choice but to give their maximum effort now. They need all the points they can get, and they certainly don’t want to look foolish. The Bruins front office announced that first round playoff tickets go on sale at 11 a.m. on Friday morning. It’s almost if Cam Neely is daring the team to give up now. With at least half a dozen players playing for contracts next season, they’re going to want to try to get every goal possible heading into the post-season (and free agency).
On a humorous note, the Ottawa Senators heard about the Bruins announcing playoff tickets. Their response was rather funny.
Well, stick tap to the Sens Twitter team for that one. It’s a pity that their cart fell over on the way to the playoffs. It’s going to take them weeks to get all those hamburgers back into the cart, and a little longer to get the cart back on the road. By now, it’s too little too late for Ottawa. At the moment, the Senators have a one-in-four chance(25.3%) of making the postseason after their latest defeat.
The Bruins are back in control of their own fate, and they’ll have even more control with a strong win tomorrow night.
