The Boston Bruins came within a minute of getting themselves back on track. A regulation win would have once again put them back into sole ownership of the final playoff spot in the East. The Bruins hadn’t played their best hockey, but they played well enough to keep a slim lead over the Anaheim Ducks. Then Corey Perry tied it up in the final minute of regulation and Ryan Getzlaf scored the game winner in overtime. The Bruins are now on 0-3-3 in their last six games(and it couldn’t have come at the worst possible time for the Black and Gold).

The only thing that stopped this from being a total disaster for the B’s was the 5-1 pounding handed the Ottawa Senators by the New York Rangers. Andrew Hammond couldn’t catch a hamburger, let alone a puck tonight. With the Bruins one point ‘earned’ (or thrown away depending on your mood) for the overtime loss the Bruins are once again even in points with the Sens. At this point, either the hockey gods are going to reward Bruins fans for their loyalty, or they’re going to drag out the hope and the misery for as long as humanely possible.

The tale of the tape shows just how mediocre the B’s were playing tonight. Only two of the Bruins were above fifty percent in the face-off circle tonight (Gregory Campbell and Patrice Bergeron). The Bruins had to over-rely on Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg, two players who were showing their age by the end of the night. (With Dougie Hamilton out, what choice did they have?) Claude Julien restricting players to limited ice time, while allowing others to play more ice than was necessary. In the end, this looked like a team that was trying to tread water and not a team that was trying to win.
How did I take the game? Perhaps this micro-rant on Twitter will put the game in perspective.
Sure, there is a certain part of us that want to look at some of the calls/non-calls made tonight. They certainly added to the frustration tonight. It’s just a crying shame that twenty professional athletes couldn’t find that spark to overcome adversity (that was often caused by their own makings).
There is still hope though. The Bruins were able to put up two power play goals, and there are enough players still playing to their potential. The Bruins are still in it, and they may just surprise us all yet.
