On March 16, 2006, the Boston Bruins beat the Ottawa Senators. They are looking to repeat history with a win against the trailing team tonight at 7:30pm.
Why is a simple win worthy of a TBT? This was the first time the Bruins ever won a shootout, having lost the previous six. Dropping a 2-0 lead in the third, the game went into a scoreless OT and they finally took the extra point in the shootout. Former goalie Tim Thomas came out with the win.

Although all of Bruins nation is looking for a much needed win tonight, we don’t want the B’s to repeat this game exactly. They have struggled greatly in shootouts this year so winning in regulation is the best option. Not to mention, allowing the Senators to get even one point will work against the Bruins playoff bid.
Speaking of shootouts, the NHL GMs met this week to discuss multiple things. On their list was the possibility of getting rid of shootouts altogether and changing the OT structure to incorporate some 3-on-3 time. This is one of the best decision they could possibly make. Hockey is a team sport. Having to rely on too much sole talent – as in a shootout – takes away the team effort. For teams like the Boston Bruins that don’t have a single player scoring 30+ goals a year, but rather a bunch scoring between 10 and 20 – wishful thinking this year – getting rid of the SO will help improve their overall record.
The last time the Bruins and Senators met, the Bruins came out with two points after winning 3-1 in Ottawa. They will be in Ottawa again tonight. Hopefully his hometown crowd can help Spooner again and bring the B’s to a regulation victory.
