The verdict is on Brad Marchand and after having a phone hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, the conclusion is that he will sit out for the next two games under suspension.  The suspension is for slew-footing New York Ranger Derick Brassard in Thursday night’s 3-0 victory.  For those who don’t know, slew-footing is:

"The act of a player using his leg or foot to knock or kick an opponent’s feet from under him, or pushes an opponent’s upper body backward with an arm or elbow, and at the same time with a forward motion of his leg, knocks or kicks the opponent’s feet from under him, causing him to fall violently to the ice. Live Feed Brad Marchand3 takeaways from the Bruins' Game 1 win over the PanthersPuck ProseBoston Bruins choke vs Edmonton Oilers: 2 key takeawaysChowder and ChampionsNHL 23 sim prediction: Who will win the 2023 Winter Classic?App Trigger3 Overreactions After One Month of the NHL SeasonPuck ProseBruins: Brad Marchand Returns, Makes Immediate ImpactPuck ProseJackets Host League-Leading BruinsUnion and Blue"

Both Brad Marchand and Brassard were both heading towards the boards after a loose puck, Marchand’s leg getting stuck under Brassard’s causing him to fall into the boards. After the play Brassard was seen clutching his leg, but there was no resulting injury or penalty. The fact that Brassard was uninjured on the play helped determine the length of the suspension Marchand received. This and the fact that Brad Marchand is not considered a repeat offender, despite being suspended twice in his career and a prior slew-footing fine in his history.  In addition to the suspension, Brad Marchand also loses out on $48,387.10 that he has to forfeit. The amount is based off of his annual salary and goes to the Players Emergency Assistance Fund.

Slew-footing is one of those plays that can do a lot of damage because it leaves the opposing player little or no time to defend himself. The Department of Player Safety noted the proximity to the boards on the Marchand hit was a factor in the decision to suspend the Bruins forward.

Through 42 games this season, Brad Marchand has posted 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points. He is currently ranked fourth on the team overall and has been a key component to their new-found confidence and consistency with his team-high +11 rating. Daniel Paille is expected to fill in his space among Bergeron and Smith per line combinations at today’s practice.
