Third Period
Good news to start the third period, Adam McQuaid was back on the Bruins bench and playing.
Despite starting the third on a powerplay, the Bruins were unable to convert allowing the Rangers to successfully kill another penalty.
Milan Lucic with a power move behind Clyde getting the puck right out in front for Krejci, but Talbot got a piece and sent the rebound away. Milan Lucic with a strong game tonight, using his speed and body to manipulate his opponent.
Carl Soderberg entered the zone with Kreider on his heels, as he lost possession Kreider hit Soderberg from behind who slammed hard into the boards. Chris Kelly answered, rushing right over barking at Kreider and dropping the gloves instantly. He did what any good teammate would do, it was a nasty hit from behind. He got a few short left-hand jabs on Kreider, making his mouth bloody. Good response from Kelly, exactly what he should have done.
While it may have been the right thing to do, he got a 2:00 for instigating for defending a player who was hit in a vulnerable position, 5:00 fighting and a 10:00 game misconduct. Kreider got 2:00 for boarding and 5:00 for fighting. (What happened to eliminating the dirty plays for player’s safety? Doesn’t this call enable players to continue to make these dangerous plays?)
At 9:49 of the period, Eriksson and Campbell worked the corners. Torey Krug made the initial shot, Eriksson was camped out in front. The puck bounced off Eriksson’s skates to the tape of his stick, he went forehand, backhand, forehand and flipped the puck top shelf just under the bar for a 3-0 Boston lead.
On the Bruins next shift, Milan Lucic got possession of the puck and surged right to Talbot who came up big with a save.
Bruins go on the power play with 6:19 left in regulation as Fast trips up Milan Lucic at the blue line. Boston 34-25 overall in shots on net through almost 14-minutes of play in the third, 8-4 racked up in just the third period alone. Not bad for a Bruins team who wasn’t producing more than a shot per player three weeks ago.
Summary: Two U’s, Two K’s, Two Points- NO LONGER ON THE BUBBLE!
The Bruins put forward a good, strong, solid sixty minute effort against the New York Rangers and were able to secure themselves their fifth-straight victory and second shutout in as many games. They were strong on the penalty kill, holding the Rangers 0-for-3 and Krug extended his point-streak to five-games with a career-high 7 assists. All in all, the Bruins are putting together a collective effort for the full sixty and are shaping up to be exactly the team we have been looking for all season long.
