The Boston Bruins announced today that eleven players were cut from the provisional 2014-15 roster. Ten of those players will be heading back to Providence to attend the AHL Bruins training camp. One player, free agent forward Bracken Kearns was released from his tryout agreement.

Forwards: Alex Fallstrom, Brian Ferlin, Seth Griffith, Jared Knight, Matt Lindblad, Tyler Randell *, and Ben Sexton

Defensemen: Chris Casto, Joe Morrow and Zach Trotman

*Needs to clear waivers before joining the P-Bruins.

For the remaining players in the mix, they’re going to want to do everything they can to find that ‘B’ jersey waiting for them in the locker room on opening night.  They will need to play to their strengths and have a technically solid performance in the last three Bruins preseason games. The Black and Gold are currently 2-1-1 in the preseason.

  • There are players that have likely earned one of the four (or five) spots available come opening night. Short of a total disaster, Ryan Spooner looks like to be the only to have locked up a spot. With Griffith, Knight, and Lindblad being sent back to Providence, Matt Fraser looks like another strong contender for a slot. He’s had a strong preseason to date as well.

David Pastrnak has been cleared to skate again with the Bruins. While he isn’t cleared for contact just yet, it’s hopeful he’ll get to be seen in at least one of the preseason games. If Pastrnak doesn’t get a chance to impress, he’ll be headed back overseas and that will make things more interesting for the remaining contenders.

Gregory Campbell has been listed as “questionable” for the season opener. He’s been battling with a mid-core injury, and still hasn’t been cleared for practice. There is a possibility he will start skating some time in the next few days.

Pastrnak might not make the roster. Campbell will likely be out for opening night. It looks like Jordan Caron just won the Boston Bruins sweepstakes. Now, before you start rolling your eyes and spewing vitriol at the computer, he’s had a good camp. Frankly, he’s had one of the better camps this preseason. His play has tightened up. He’s improved on the fore check, and has made solid defensive plays. He was even willing to take on two Capitals at once.

If any of us suggested Jordan Caron as a starting player last season, we would have had our media credentials lit on fire by an angry mob. Caron has improved. He’s probably the most improved player from what we’ve seen last year. I’m curious to see where the end up putting Caron on opening night. (Daniel PailleRyan Spooner-Jordan Caron wouldn’t be a terrible line.)

It’s nice to see that AHL road dog Bobby Robins is still in the hunt for his first NHL level job. He’s a workhorse who brings the spirit of the old Merlot Line to Boston. If you’ve ever watched him fight, he seems to work on equal parts fearlessness and madness. It’s a bit of a long shot, but he’s still in the mix.
