Bruins Development Camp Is Underway

The Boston Bruins top prospects have completed two days of the team’s development camp and after enduring grueling off ice workouts in 100 degree (Fahrenheit) heat in which the boys were tested for strength, flexibility, and psychological endurance on day 1, the aspect of camp everyone came to see took place in the afternoon of day 2.

Over 800 spectators filled the stands at Ristuccia Arena, the Bruins training facility in Wilmington, Massachusetts just twenty miles north of TD Garden, where the young skaters hope to make their home arena in the very near future. The fans were not disappointed as the players were put through their paces by the Providence Bruins coaching staff. As the Boston staff looked on from the stands and a group of young fans repeatedly chanted Tyler Seguin’s name, the players engaged in drills that showcased their speed, puck handling abilities, passing and shooting skills, along with one on one puck battles. As expected, the youngsters shouting Seguin’s name were very impressed with the eighteen year old’s speed, puck control, and decision making processes.

Jordan Caron also looked to be ready to make the leap from major junior hockey to the NHL. Caron has, what is termed as, a “pro shot” and uses his size to protect the puck from defenders. He needs to continue to work on his speed but it would not be a detriment if he were to step right into the B’s line up in the fall.

Jared Knight showed good hockey sense and uses his 6’ 1” frame to be in the right place at the right time. The eighteen year old member of the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League scored 36 goals and 21 assists, totaling 57 points in 63 games. Knight is a native of Battle Creek, Michigan and was drafted by the B’s in the 2nd round, 32nd overall, in the 2010 Entry Draft.

Several fans commented on the play of big Joe Colborne. The University of Denver product’s speed, size, and strength, impressed many including Director of Player Development, Don Sweeney. Sweeney commented to the Boston Globe that he liked how Colborne, Caron, and goaltender Michael Hutchinson have improved since last year’s prospect camp.

“We are certainly seeing progression…” Sweeney said of the three players.

The group returns to the ice for Day 3 Thursday July 8, 2010 at 10:00am at the Ristuccia Center.
