The NBA finals are over. The Red Sox have swept the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston sports fanatics are turning their attention to the NHL Entry Draft which will take place at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Friday June 25, 2010. Boston’s first selection will be made when General Manager Peter Chiarelli announces the name of either Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin. Each has become a household name in New England. Ask anyone on the street who they would prefer to see in a Bruins uniform when the 2010-2011 begins in October and you will get an opinion on who and why. Most fans in Beantown are not discussing who they would like to see selected with the team’s other first round pick and provided the organization does not trade the pick and judging by Boston’s recent draft history-the team has taken one defenseman in the last two drafts, combined-fans may want to become familiar with a trio of defensemen who may still be available when it is the Bruins turn to make the pick. One such player is Edmonton Oil Kings, Mark Pysyk. The Western Hockey Leaguer draws favorable comparisons to Chicago’s Duncan Keith and Anaheim’s Scott Niedermayer. Another Western Hockey League product, Dylan McIlrath of the Moose Jaw Warriors, plays with a chip on his shoulder and is viewed as the next Shea Weber. The third d-man whom the Bruins may be interested in is American born, Derek Forbort. Forbort applied his talent and skill with USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program’s Under-18 team and at six feet, five inches tall, he could be Boston’s answer to Buffalo’s Tyler Myers. All three players are known for their excellent skating, puck handling, and passing skills, coveted by all NHL teams. Boston may also be in the hunt for a goaltender. They have drafted a total of one in the last seven drafts. Generally, netminders are picked in the latter rounds but if the one the B’s are interested in is available in the middle rounds look for them to use a pick at that time to make the selection.
