Ryan Spooner’s name has been a hot-button one in terms of a trade for quite some time. That time may be coming soon as the Boston Bruins are exploring trades

It’s the offseason in Boston and the first big Boston Bruins trade rumor has surfaced. According to Ryan Kennedy of the Hockey News, the Bruins are entertaining offers on RFA forward, Ryan Spooner. The New Jersey Devils, Vegas Golden Knights, and Vancouver Canucks are rumored to be interested in Spooner’s services. Spooner’s name has reappeared more since being scratched twice in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Ottawa Senators.

A trade involving Spooner at some point in the offseason makes sense from the Bruins perspective because of his performance this year and the young depth in the Bruins organization. Spooner tallied 11 goals and 39 points in 78 games this past season. This disappointed Bruins fans due to the fact that he had 49 points in just two more games last season.

What could a Spooner trade entail?

This is all purely speculation, and we will get a clearer image if a trade eventually happens. A Ryan Spooner trade could unfold in two likely scenarios: A sign-and-trade or a trade of his free agent rights. Personally, I think a trade of his rights is much more likely. The Bruins have done it in the past when they dealt Carl Soderberg’s rights to the Colorado Avalanche. The difference, however, is that Soderberg was a UFA and not an RFA.

What a trade for Spooner’s rights could fetch for the Bruins is yet to be seen. But, it’s not totally unreasonable to expect a third-round pick as a return due to Spooner’s age and the fact that he likely won’t cost a ton for a team to sign. Although we have seen Spooner struggle to find a role and consistent success in Boston, the potential is still certainly there for success. He is still just 25 years old and will be 26 in late January.
