Malcolm Subban could still become the backup goaltender for the Boston Bruins.

Malcolm Subban is coming off surgery to repair a shattered larynx, sustained in an injury last February.  His rehabilitation has progressed nicely in the offseason. So much so the Boston Bruins feel like Subban could pull off a minor upset and win the number two job in Boston.

If that’s the case, why would the Boston Bruins bring back Anton Khudobin? Also, why ask Subban to show up not at training camp, but development camp?

Khudobin’s position isn’t as secure as it appears. He spent most of last season in the AHL. Don Sweeney and company stated that they wanted to see more competition at camp. Having Khudobin and Subban fighting out for the number two slot will certainly bring that competition.

Secondly, the Boston Bruins needed to see where Subban was. Subban lost half a season due to his injury, and the Black and Gold brought him to development camp to see how far his recuperation had come. At the moment, it’s so far so good for Subban.

“He was progressing great,” offered B’s assistant coach Jay Pandolfo on seeing Subban’s first day on the ice. “It was unfortunate, the injury he had, having to miss half a season. But he’s definitely on the right track.”

Subban plays like Tim Thomas. There is fearlessness in him. Like Thomas, he throws his body around the crease in attempts to stop pucks. Subban looks good in net and he certainly feels ready to compete.

“Honestly, I feel like a tank,” said Subban. “I’m not even worried at all about getting hit again.”

Now it’s all up to Subban. He has the skill set to become an impressive NHL goaltender. He’s going to need to go out there and prove he’s ready for the challenge.

“My goal is to make the team, come in this year as it is every year,” Subban said. “So that’s what I’m going to try and do, but regardless of where I am I just have to play well, give my team a chance to win every night. I feel like if I can bring that, for sure, they’ll notice and they’ll respect that, and hopefully I’ll get an opportunity, an opportunity that I want.”
