Boston Bruins: Jimmy Vesey Sweepstakes Takes A Turn For The Worse as his Rights were Traded to the Buffalo Sabres

Jimmy Vesey has been one of the biggest names in hockey for over a year now, which is impressive given the fact that he’s never played a professional game yet. The former Nashville Predators draft pick informed his club that he would be testing free agency after a phenomenal career at Harvard University, much to the chagrin of Predators General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Dave Poile.

Up until now, teams were simply waiting for the opportunity to speak to Vesey on August 15th when he will officially become a free agent. The Boston Bruins were one of the teams considered to be hot on Vesey’s tracks, and the young Reading, Massachusetts native confirmed as much himself.

“I think the Bruins will definitely be on my list of teams,” Jimmy Vesey said.

The wait wasn’t just something that 29 NHL Franchises had to wait for, however, as Vesey was also stuck waiting while his rights remained property of the same Nashville team he had shunned. The wait, however, is giving Vesey time to think about what he wants in a franchise and where he ultimately wants to go.

“On Aug. 15 I can start talking to teams, and see what they’re going to say to me,” Vesey said. “Then, I think we’ll probably take several days after that to come to a decision.”

The wait, however, could be coming to an end far sooner than the August 15th date that everybody was waiting for.

The Buffalo Sabres traded one of their four third round draft picks (Originally from Minnesota via Anaheim via New Jersey via Florida) to the Nashville Predators in exchange for the rights to Vesey. the Sabres now have the opportunity to speak to Vesey up until the August 15th free agency date prior to any other club getting a chance to communicate with him and his representatives. Rumors of Buffalo being a potential landing spot were mentioned by Joe Haggerty Comcast Sportsnet New England months ago.

In his third year at Harvard, Vesey scored 32 goals and added 26 assists for 58 points in 37 games. In his final year as a member of the Crimson, Vesey scored 24 times and added 22 assists for 46 points in 33 games.  His well-rounded ability has many NHL organizations believing the 23 year-old forward can be an immediate impact player in a top-six role, and the Buffalo Sabres could potentially lure Vesey in with the promise of playing time alongside his good friend Jack Eichel.
