Boston Bruins: Careless Turnovers Cost Bruins Game and Season and Extremely Damage Their Postseason Chances.

The Boston Bruins this season have played 15 games down by at least three goals or more and lost all 15 as they lost 6-1 to the Ottawa Senators Saturday afternoon at TD Garden. Carelessness with the puck, numerous turnovers, and an extreme lack of energy cost the Bruins big time as the Senators scored four goals in the second period in just over a 10-minute span.

David Pastrnak opened the scoring early with a beautiful breakaway goal 5:04 into the game and unfortunately that was the only goal the Bruins could put on the board.

More from Causeway Crowd

Ottawa had 17 shots on goal after 20-minutes of play and then dominated the Bruins all over the ice in the second. They crashed the net, forechecked hard, and forced the Bruins to throw the puck away up the wall. Shots were 12-12 in the second but if you watched it, you saw just how hard Ottawa pushed and how little pushback the Bruins responded with.

Tuukka Rask was ruled out last-minute with an illness forcing Jonas Gustavsson to take his place between the pipes in a must-win game. He played very well in the first period while being pummeled with shots. In the second, defensive zone turnovers left him out to dry. Chris Neil crashed the net to tie it at 1-1, the second goal was a beautiful deflection from the top of the circle by Zack Smith. Just things that Gustavsson cannot be blamed for.

Boston now has to hope that the Flyers cannot get more than a point in their remaining two games. As I write this, the Flyers are at home against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Rangers did the Bruins a favor by defeating the Red Wings 3-2 but it didn’t matter because the Bruins couldn’t defeat the Senators. Detroit officially clinched the third spot in the Atlantic division leaving the Bruins hoping the Flyers cannot overtake them in the second wild card spot.

Time to go sit back, grab a beer (or a few) and hope the Flyers continue to collapse. Penguins today, Islanders tomorrow, playoff spot today, tomorrow, or no playoff spot at all. Only time will tell.
