The Boston Bruins have provided some more details about the fractured Larynx that Malcolm Subban suffered on February 6th 2016. “Malcolm underwent successful surgery on February 8 at Mass. Eye and Ear Hospital in Boston to repair his larnyx fracture.” The team also announced that he was released from the hospital, and the timetable for his return would be a long one, at the very least. “He is doing well and has been released from the hospital. While there is no definitive timetable for his return at this point, he is expected to be out a minimum of eight weeks.”

In his 27 games with Providence this season, Malcolm Subban has compiled a 14-8-5 record with a 2.46 goals against average and a 0.911 save percentage along with one shutout. All of those numbers are respectable, but the young goaltender will be sitting on the sideline for a long time during his recovery. Missing Malcolm Subban for two months could have been very damaging to the Providence Bruins if it wasn’t for their incredible depth at the goaltending position this season.

The Bruins prepared for this outcome almost immediately by recalling Jeremy Smith from his loan to the Iowa Wild, the Minnesota Wild’s AHL affiliate. Jeremy Smith has already provided some solid goaltending for the Providence Bruins, winning his first game with the team this season by a score of 3-2 with a 25 save effort against the Albany Devils. Frank Vatrano once again showcased his ability by scoring two goals and taking 10 shots on net.

Jeremy Smith has struggled in Iowa this season, playing in 23 games and posting a 5-14-3 record with a 2.94 goals against average and a 0.911 save percentage. While his save percentage is equal to that of Malcolm Subban‘s, it’s still clear that a nearly 3.00 goals against average as well as his abysmal record were not what he or the Bruins’ were hoping for this season.

The Iowa Wild currently sit in seventh in the Central Division in the AHL with a  14-28-3-3 record. Their total of 34 total points puts them in the 29th position in the entire league, showing that the team might have more underlying issues than simply goaltending. When looking at the Iowa Wild’s roster, it’s no surprise to see that only three players have a positive plus/minus rating, and seven have a rating of zero. The remaining 27 players who have participated in games all have negative ratings.

With Malcolm Subban out of the lineup for the foreseeable future, both Jeremy Smith and Zane McIntyre will get the opportunity to showcase their ability. As mentioned, Jeremy Smith started off his tenure with the Providence Bruins far more positive note than he was riding in Iowa. He will need to build upon that to help the Providence Bruins, who are currently sitting in fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a 22-15-8-2 record.
