Boston Bruins Earn First Round Pick by Moving Martin Jones.

When the Boston Bruins traded Milan Lucic just before the start of the 2015 Entry Draft, the fans were upset. Don Sweeney had made a few moves that appeared baffling to the B’s fan base. As the day progressed, the Lucic trade began making more and more sense to most Bruins fans. The B’s couldn’t afford to keep Lucic, and they were able to get a first round pick and backup goaltender Martin Jones from the Los Angeles Kings. It turned out to be the ‘better’ deal of the Bruins two big moves on draft day.

Yesterday, the Boston Bruins chose to move Martin Jones. The Bruins traded him to the San Jose Sharks in return for their first round pick and prospect Sean Kuraly. While the initial Lucic trade made a lot of sense, the acquisition of a second first round pick is making Sweeney look an awful lot better than he did this weekend. Now, the Bruins will be looking at another series of picks going into the 2016 Draft.

On Felger and Mazz yesterday, Michael Felger  talked about the move, and how it made a lot of sense for the embattled general manager. “Now Milan Lucic has gotten the Bruins two first-round picks and two prospects,” said Felger. “San Jose, I think stinks and is going to continue to stink. San Jose is going down. They missed the playoffs last year, they drafted ninth this year. I don’t know how much better they’re going to be.

“I think you’re going to have another top-ten pick out of that one, and who the hell knows how low they’re going to go. For Martin Jones. Who? … Sorry to put a pause on the Don Sweeney bashing. That’s a good return.”

  • This trade makes an awful lot of sense. Martin Jones might have been too good to be a backup goaltender in Boston. The Boston Bruins have at least three players competing for the number two slot in September. The Bruins went from having no number two netminder, to having quite a few choices. This meant that Jones was going to be moved from the moment we got him, and the Bruins cleaned up nicely with the trade.

I’m not saying it’s time to start chanting “Thank You, Lucic!” in the TD Garden. As a GM though, Sweeney looks a lot better than he did last weekend. Now, let’s see how Sweeney handles the helm as the Bruins enter free agency frenzy.
