The Boston Bruins announced on Monday that forward Simon Gagne will not return to the team for the remainder of the season to cope with personal matters.

The 34-year-old veteran winger has been away from the club since December 10 to care for his ailing father, Pierre. He passed away the day after Christmas succumbing to liver cancer.

The Bruins released a statement on Gagne’s behalf saying in part, “The last month has been extremely difficult for me with my father being sick and his passing. To play in the NHL you have to be 100 percent mentally, emotionally, and physically committed to the game. At this time I know that I cannot be close to those levels.”

Gagne also spoke about the support he has received from not just teammates, but the NHL as a whole during his difficult time. “I would like to thank the fans and the NHL family for all of the support that they have given my family and I during this difficult time — it has truly meant a lot.”

The former Philadelphia Flyer was invited to tryout with the Bruins during training camp after not playing last season. He signed a one-year deal worth $600,000 soon after the season began. Gagne recorded three goals and an assist in 23 games.

General Manager Peter Chiarelli changed Gagne’s status to a suspended player in order for Boston to maintain a full roster. He will not be paid and his salary will not count against the Bruins salary cap number.

“I spoke to Simon about this and he assured me that we have his full support with this status change,” said Chiarelli. “At this time Simon feels that he has to be home with his family and he has the complete support of the Boston Bruins organization with this decision.”

Gagne’s decision reminds us all that hockey is just a game. There are more important things in life and family is at the top of that list. Bruins fans should be in agreement that Simon’s decision is the right one if he is still grieving.

Thoughts and prayers go out to the Gagne family during this difficult time.
